WEEK 7: Progress...

I have collected/taken photos that I think will create an 'absurd landscape' when combined. Here are some I wish to include..

'Landscape of the absurd'

TRACEY MOFFATT's photography:
Moffatt's work came to mind when starting to think about this project. The artist often photoshops herself and other objects into scenes. Her series 'First Jobs' is the best example of this.

Surrealism:

WEEK 6- Dada:

An 'anti-art' movement which took place in the early 20th century. Dadaism was a reaction to the way in which photography had taken over as the medium for producing 'real' or true to life images. Prior knowledge on aesthetics and composition was deliberately ignored. Art works of this era often included text and the use of collage, it was very much abstract in style.

APPRAISAL

The design process regarding the poster for the fictional music festival ‘Street Beat Festival’ involved working with design elements. The main image featured on the poster is a section of a painting which I scanned.

Line has been used in an expressive way throughout the composition. Fine, flowing and jagged black lines were used to convey energy and enthusiasm. The combination of lines often create an abstract image within the painting, these were related to the theme of music (drum sticks, music notes and guitar strings) Stroke weight was varied to add interest. In one section of the composition, the colours from the painting appear to bleed out in horizontal lines, this was an attempt to link the image to the text. Type also creates horizontal lines across the page. Lines are also visible vertically, seen again through use of text, which winds downwards in a curved fashion.
When looking at my final design, I notice that there are four main shapes. These are (from left) the space/mouth where the main text is positioned, the blue ‘lips’ (border), the body of what is meant to be a guitar and the following box of text. These curled shapes work to separate the page vertically, balancing the composition.
When choosing a colour scheme which would attract attention and create contrast, I found that complementary colours worked effectively. Blue, yellow, orange and red are typical colours in advertising, used because they are bright and bold.
The texture included on my poster is subtle so as not to become over-crowded. The painting itself contained real texture and this was captured to a certain extent when scanned. The texture on the shape surrounding the title of the festival was altered and enhanced using a filter effect on photoshop. A washed out grayscale image of a crowd at music festival I attended was used as part of the background to imply texture and add depth to the overall image.

Week 5- final poster designs:)

Though there is not a lot of difference between the final options, I thought I would upload both designs. One includes a faded image of a crowd (photo taken at a Falls music festival) and there is left white. The blank background provides a more obvious example of positive/negative space but the area possibly lacks interest, or the other option is too 'complicated'/'busy'...? Indecisive.

FOR SOME REASON THE COLOURS IN THE IMAGES HAVE BEEN INVERTED. DETAILS ARE MISSING, SO THAT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. WILL TRY AGAIN AT A LATER DATE.

Ideas:

For our second assignment, I will be designing a poster for a music festival titled 'Street Beat Festival'. The name relates to the location of the festival which is Brunswick street, Melbourne. Because the festival is taking place in a city, it is difficult to find an area suitable to accommodate a large number of people. In order for the event to be successful and stand out from other similar festivals, organisers have decided to close one of the city’s most popular streets for a day in January. An outdoor location is ideal as the festival will occur in summer. The area enables the use of multiple stages and also the inclusion of street stalls and markets. The event will begin in the late morning and continue through the day, finishing late that night.
The genre of music that will feature is predominantly ‘rock’. Bands will include Radiohead, The Strokes, Interpol, Arcade Fire and more.
The event aims to attract music-lovers between the ages of 15 and 30, it will be an alcohol free event to promote safety for younger attendees. The festival aims to have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, uniting people with common interests. Entry will require a ticket which would be expected considering the number of well-known, established international and national acts.
The poster design should reflect Melbourne and its music scene.

****
For my design I want to either use some of the photos I have taken at music festivals I've attended, or use something basic/arty/creative. If not the photos then I might use a section of an artwork I painted on a cut out of a guitar. I was inspired when I saw it in my room and I think it could make for an interesting poster.

***
These are VERY rough sketches/drawings, outlining the basic layout of my poster. I decided I wanted to use the scanned image of the painting because I feel it is more interesting than manilipulating a photo in this case. It also allows me to do more with texture and line. I want the image to be a major feature in the composition and have the type work around it. At this stage I think all text will be black to contrast against the colours used in the image.

Festival Poster - POSITIVE/NEGATIVE SPACE & CONTRAST

POSITIVE/NEGATIVE SPACE:

In the poster designs I have looked at, use of negative space enables the more important features to be prominant. This design principle can be used to create contrast in the composition. Negative space=important, the background is as much a part of the overall design as the text and graphics included.

Examples using positive/negative space:

• The is a clear separation between image/foreground and background, the colours and bold lines used ensure this.

• Shape is a dominant element in this design, the image is placed centrally which emphasises its importantce. Line has been used to contour, there are also horizontal lines evident, through use of text. Complementary colours have been used in the main image, they work to create contrast and make it stand out. Texture has been implied with used of a pattern ('dots') which changes slightly, this adds interest.

• I like this design mainly because of the image featured and the colours used. The design elements have been used effectively.

• I think the way in which importance is placed on the image on this poster will influence my final design. It is visually appealing.

• Positive/negative space in this design is evident due to the use of colour. The central image of the guitar and the name of the festival create the dominant shape on the page and the background (gradient-sunset) which also features text, creates the socondary shape. The white text and lines also appear as negative space.

• In this design, shape has been used to separate the page vertically. The image of the guitar is instantly recognised. In order to separate foreground from background, a combination of warm and (almost) cool colours has been used, this is effective because warm colours advances and cool colours recede. This is also an example of a complementary colour scheme. Line, as seen in the graphics, has been used in an expressive way, this creates contrast (the overall image does not appear flat)

• Again, this design appeals to me mainly because of the colours used. The composition is eye-catching and communicates the vibe of the festival correctly.

• This poster is quite simple, using a limited palette and basic graphics which proves to be effective. I am also influenced by the way in which the composition is balanced.

• The above festival poster clearly demonstrates the use of positive and negative space. While the image is bold and used a combination of black and bright colour, the background is almost completely white. The image and negative space surrounding it both create shapes of importance.

• The focus of this design seems to be colour and shape. The shape acts as a line which guides the viewers eye through the composition. The majority of the poster is in black and white, colour is used only in a small area to add interest. The shape of the shape of the umbrella includes all colours of the colour wheel. The background features a gradient change, this is the only implication of texture included.

• I like the simplicity of this design and the interesting way in which is has been balanced from top to bottom. The image and text work together well.

• The limited use of colour enable the text and image to work well together. This is something I hope to achieve in my poster design.

• The shapes created through the use of positive/negative space in this design are quite prominant. A 'heart' shape image is visable. The yellow used for the shape on the face contrasts against the black in the background which takes up most of the composition.

• Yellow, pink, white and black are very bold colours. They work together to draw attention to the design. Shapes are established through the contrast of these colours. The text works as lines, framing the main image on the page.

• The photogragh used for this poster is very bold and interesting. I find this design aesthetically pleasing

• The way in which shapes are implied in this poster has inspired me to attempt a similar effect for my design, through the use of positive and negative space.

CONTRAST:

• The colour yellow, used for the main image and box surrounding the main text, is bright, bold and stands out from the black and white background. The banana graphic included appears flat wheras the background is textured. These two elements work together to create contrast

•I immediately noticed the use of texture in this image. The black and white cross-hatching gives the composition depth. Line has been used to separate the two sections of the poster (image and text) and also as a part of the illustration (outlines). As I mentioned previously, bright/ bold colours have been used.

• The simplicity and depth of this design is what appeals to me. It works as art as well as a form of communication.

• This design demonstrates the importance of a combination of elements. I will take this into account when designing the poster for my music festival.

• The design concept of contrast is created in thei design through the use of colour. The image which consists mainly of primary colours is dominant and stands out against the muted natural colour of the background.

• Line has been used in an emotive fashion. The lines used in the illustration included are detailed and flowing. The colours blue, green and yellow are analogous colours and have been used together. Texture is seen through the almost paintily style of the image on the poster. Because the image is coloured and dominant, it becomes an entire shape within itself.

• The graphic style is what interests me about this design.

• Again, this poster design has me wanting to produce a poster which is graphically interesting as well as serving the purpose of communicating information.

• Contrast is apparent due to the diffence in detail (could be described as texture) between the bottom third and the top of the poster. The image of the crowd is 'busy' and the image of the sky, dominating the composition is plain and uncluttered. In the same areas, contrast is indicated through the differce in colour.

•Line is seen in this design through the use of text and images (the dividing 'line'). The main colour used is a pale blue, which is balanced by the darker image at the bottom of the page. It could be said that the people in the crowd pictured creat texture on the poster.

•I like that this design, by including a relevent photograph, accurately describes the festival which is being advertised.

• This poster does not necessarily inspire me in the layout sense, it has influenced me to clearly illustrate the point of the design by including relevent imagery.

• In this example contrast is achieved with the use of texture and colour. The foreground or bottom half of the image is detailed with the inclusion of shadow and pattern. The sky at the top of the design in smooth. The dark green teamed with warmer colours appears different to the pale blue of the sky

• Texture can be seen in the patterns featured on the hills and grass in the foreground and also on the lettering of 'Splendour in the Grass'. A combination of warm and cool colours have been used which compliment each other and make certain features stand out (type and animals). Line is seen horizontally through the centre of the poster, separating top and bottom. It is also implied through the text in yellow and on the red banner. This works to guide you through the composition. Shape is an important aspect, organic and geometric shapes have been layered throughout to give a sense of depth.

• The detail and quality of the graphics in this design is impressive. I appreciate its artistic value, although my critisism would be that the main text is not easily read.

• The depth created in this poster is something that I would possibly attempt to recreate when producing my own design.

Week 4- music festival poster design

I found these images online. These designs stood out to me due to their aesthetic appeal and the design elements used.

COLOUR

Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, Triadic. I was thinking about these colour schemes when I was watching this music video, produced by one of my favourite bands. Throughout the clip there are differences in the itensity of colour, levels of contrast and general mood created. There definitely appears to be an emphasis on colour.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ_uJj2r_3k&feature=channel

It interesting looking at a 'colour wheel' and seeing how it all works. To develop colour schemes it is helpful to see how colours work together to create different effects.

I was constantly refering to this when completing the next three versions of the silhouettes using complementary, analogous and monochromatic colour schemes.

COLOUR:
*Notions of colour have been formed through culture/over time.
*Organises visual hierarchy.
*Creates balance/ dynamic visual illusion.
*Evokes emotion, implies temperature.
*Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary and Triadic.
*Value = amount of black/white added.
*Saturation = brightness of colour.
*Discord = opposite of colour harmony, (not complementary).

SHAPE

Silhouettes:
Shape is the dominant element in design consisting of silhouettes. A simple shape can describe a lot about an object. When converting my Little Red Riding Hood drawing into a basic shape, I found that the features could be communicated without the use of line or texture. This is the initial black and white version.

SHAPE:
*Creates impact, draws attention, simplifies.
*Geometric, natural/organic, abstract.
*Positive/negative shapes.
*Defines space.
*Draws attention to 'hot spots'- functionality.
*Silhouettes, stencil art.

Examples of stencil art found in Melbourne:

These photos show how stencil art is made up of positive/negative shapes, both equally important in forming the image.

Week 3- ART NOUVEAU

1. After looking at the art produced during this movement, the difference between The American and European examples is quite pronounced. While both share the same general qualities (an emphasis on beauty, organic shapes and flowing lines) It's noticed that artists based in America had a more conservative approach. American artist William H. Bradley's work was influenced by Japanese art.

Artwork by Alphonse Mucha, a leading exponent of Art Nouveau, gives an example of the 'European style' at the time (turn of the 20th century).

2. Artwork produced in this period was often used for commercial purposes. It was common to see posters featuring this graphic style. The idea of being surrounded by beauty was important, this included everyday things like advertisements.
AD FOR BICYCLES:

3. The artistic style that was predominant at the time, has been reflected upon in more recent times. Again, in the form of a poster, direct links can be seen between this design and Art Nouveau:

The colours used in this psychedelic Pink Floyd poster are brighter but the basic principles remain.

4. The movement began in France as a reaction to the Industrial Revolution. Artists made a conscious effort to bring beauty to the world. Because of this, even simple objects such as tables and chairs were focused on.

5. The jewellry produced at this time was highly decorative and feminine, and again an emphasis on swirling lines and 'S' shaped images was seen.

creating texture

After taking my photos of textured surfaces and being able to use them in my work (creating patterns etc) I experimented by using different mediums like lipstick, charcoal and coffee and scanned objects to obtain various effects.
