HOME OF THE FUTURE: Research

Taken from http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/07/09/habitat-2020-off-the-grid-future-abode/

'One of the most effective ways to cut down the ecological footprint of buildings is to follow the lead of nature through biomimicry. Habitat 2020 is a future forward example of biomimetic architecture that fuses high-tech ideas with basic cellular functions to create ‘living’ structures that operate like natural organisms. This nature-inspired approach to city living looks at the urban landscape as a dynamic and ever-evolving ecosystem. Within this cityscape, buildings open, close, breathe and adapt according to their environment.'

When designing the exterior, this is an interesting theory to go by. Through research I have conducted into climate change and the weather of the future, I have found obvious increases in general temperature.
Another interesting issue is rising sea levels. This could be taken into account (and perhaps exaggerated) in a design for the exterior of a home- maybe it could be on stilts?

Most of the information I have looked at regarding future living, revolves around being environmentally friendsly. 'Smart homes' are becoming more popular, this involves solar panels and recycled waste water etc.

For the inside of the house,I have seen interior design with the inclusion of things like polished concrete floors and generally geometric-shaped objects and features.
As the population grows more space is required, therefore furniture may be versitile/fold into walls.
Technology is difficult to predict, but it is advancing very quickly. I have read theories that things like hidden computers, sensors, microphones and electronics will be in homes. Other predictions include central computers that accept voice commands, computer that tracks movement, turns on/off lights and adjusts temperature, electronics/appliances will be networked and connected to the internet and televisions, computers and phones will be merged into one device.

Robotics are also often mentioned in discussions regarding homes in the future. It is predicted that there may be robots doing our cleaning, washing and cooking etc.

Image #2- Art Nouveau

Characteristics:
-Borders
-Asymmetry
-Detail
-Outline
* I also now see similarites between art nouveau and psychedelia (a cross between the two is seen in an expample I included with my original research on this style, a Pink Floyd poster).

Designing..

I took screen shots of my progress but failed to do so until a little way into my designing. I played around with different colours and patterns on both photoshop and illustrator until I had a poster I was mildly happy with.

I wasn't entirely pleased with the poster as it was not quite what I had in mind but I do still like it.

Week 10: PROGRESS

My very rough, initial planning of poster:

I did a drawing of a 'piasley' shape to form a pattern from as well as took photos to use for my design.

Image #2: psychedelia

Reading through Jenny Holzer's list of truisms again, there were a few statements that I can picture being included on a picture in the 60's or that would suit the artistic style due to the themes involved:

-There is a fine line between information and propoganda.
-Romantic love was invented to manipulate women.
-Moderation kills the spirit.
-Dreaming while awake is a frightening contradiction.

PSYCHEDELIC ARTISTS/DESIGNERS:

Pablo Amaringo

Ernst Fuchs

Wes Wilson

Bonnie Maclean

Victor Moscoso... I love his art work!

Jefferson Airplane music video, definitely illustrates psychedelia.

PSYCHEDELIA

Psychedelic art is anything created in the 1960's, inspired by hallucinations due to drug use (LSD etc), spirituality and politics. Psychedelic = 'mind manifesting'. The art produced consists of bright colours, warping typography, paisley patterns, kaleidoscopic effects and often spiritual figures.
This graphic style was seen on posters, album covers, comics etc. The art was associated with music at the time, especially the musical equivalent 'psychedelic rock'.
I find this art very appealing. The styles are still seen today in the same context.

Image #1: Dadaism

RESEARCH:
Aspects of design associated with this movement:
-Artists involved in this movement deliberately ignored rules of composition.
-Often emphasis on typography, (random letters, non-sensical words).
-Abstraction.
-Collage and photomontage.
-Emphasis on texture (seen in 3D 'assemblages')
-Shape: cut-out paper and other images.
-Line: particularly seen through use of text. Features of composition positioned diagonally, horizontally, vertically etc.

I looked at many artists whose work was created in the dada style.
I really liked the detail and collage of Hannah Höch:

Another artist whose work I admire is Jefim Golyscheff. The use of mixed media and contrasting textures (especially in the following example) is really effective.

Raoul Hausmann's artwork interests me again because of the images included. I also think the colours used are effective. The placement on the page is aesthetically pleasing despite dadaism being an 'anti-art' (and therefore anti-balance of composition) movement.

The geometric shapes and 'random' arrangement in this design by Sophie Taeuber-Arp remind me of designs seen today. It is simple but appealing.
